SET DESIGN and Architecture
Viskovici Luxury Home - NFO commision
I had the oppertunity to work for the Croatian architecture company NFO - Non Formalna Organizacia, on archviz concepts on a pre-exsisting luxury holiday home in Viskovici, Istria.
I had a week to build a photorealistic recreation of the villa and implement my original design for alterations for the pool house and the main terrace.
For this I built the environment, buildings and concepts in sketchup and learnt their in-house render engine over the course of an afternoon to create the final renders.
Antigone
Antigone Line Drawings
The play Antigone by Sophocles centres on conflict between state law and moral law - made especially relevant in our current post truth-age. To keep this play relevant to a modern audience whilst paying homage to classic Greek Theatre, I created a set based on a newsroom with a live feed projected onto the cyclorama.

The set would be split into the sections of classical Greek Theatre. The Orchestra would be a newsroom studio in which news reporters (the Chorus) would be located, while the skene (where the main action takes place) would resemble an ancient building used for Politics, similar to a parliament.

This version of Sweeny Todd is set in the 1960's and is staged in
their bar stools whilst they are served pies and drinks through-out the show. This is an immersive set, in which every aspect of the environment is used to inject tension at the right times and in the right place.

TOP GIRLS
This was my first real set that I had built. The scene was for an extract from Top Girls by Caryll Churchill. Within this extract, Marlene (the lead character) invites remarkable women from history and fiction to celebrate her promotion. It is this theme of idolising others that I used as inspiration for my design.
Top Girls Initial concept
My initial design was created in Promenade in a café setting.
I wanted to portray through the set the humanity of the remarkable people by placing them on the same level as the audience.
However after talks with the director, I changed the set to an end on set to fit closer to her vision.
Top Girls Last Supper Concept Render
For my second design, I created a set which replicates Leonardo Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' in which Jesus Christ is depicted as a carpenter; eating at a trestle table.
TOP GIRLS LINE DRAWINGS
I drew on the painting's linear perspective. My set creates a similar illusion - it is built with forced perspective. All the characters that enter through the central doors seem to be of godly size, but when they make their way to the table, they return to normal dimensions, proving that they are simply human.
TOP GIRLS CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS
I had to adapt the set to cater for our budget. I changed the number of vertical stilts on the side panels from five to three. I decided to prioritise the horizontal planks as that was vital in selling the forced perspective.
I also designed some French Braces to hold up the side panels that fit the specification of the set.
TASTE OF HONEY
I devised a set based on a square man-made industrial beehive. The title is, of course, meant ironically - in this bleak drama, there is little that tastes as sweet as honey.
